MEDIA RELEASE: Talk Like a Pirate Day 2015
WEDNESDAY 22/07/2015 10:00AM

Every 14 hours, a parent in Australia is told, “your child has cancer”.

Hearing these words is life-changing – everything else happening in your life becomes background noise. But focusing on your child’s health and wellbeing doesn’t always come easy. With careers, pets, financial and family stability on the line, the impacts of childhood cancer often hit hard in more ways than one.

Since 1975, Childhood Cancer Support has been providing a safe haven for regional families whose child is undergoing life-saving treatment for cancer in Brisbane. Leaving your home to come to Brisbane for treatment can continue for months, so keeping the family together is of utmost importance.

Childhood Cancer Support provides medium to long-term accommodation for up to 12 families at any one time at their facilities at Herston, right behind the former Royal Children’s hospital.

As a not-for-profit organisation, the funding to maintain and increase our services and facilities for oncology families relies heavily on the generosity of the public. That’s why on Friday 19 September each year, people across Australia loosen their ties and ditch the school uniform to Talk Like a Pirate for Childhood Cancer Support. Talk Like a Pirate Day is all about dressing up and having fun, while raising vital funds for Childhood Cancer Support.

Talk Like a Pirate Day is great fundraising event for schools, community groups, workplaces and individuals to get involved in. Whether you decide to set up a gold coin donation for a free dress day at school, or join the Childhood Cancer Support team’s annual Brisbane event – we appreciate your support!

In 2015, Childhood Cancer Support will be a holding its annual event on the grounds of the Queensland Maritime Museum, with appearances by Captain Jack Pirate Magician and the museum’s Pirate Pantomime. The day will run from approximately 10am – 2pm, with food, entertainment and lots of pirate fun for the whole family.
